West Elk trailhead 1-9-16

A series of snow squalls kept the West Elk trails well-stocked with freshies all weekend. Snow flurries mixed with partly sunny skies. Temps were in the high teens and low 20s, depending on the weather. Hope you got out to enjoy the powder. It was truly amazing — soft and fluffy. On Sunday afternoon, Tod Tibbetts ran the ginzugroomer around all the trails to smooth out the bumps.

Reminder to snowshoers! The West Elk trails are multi-use trails, which means we share the trails. In the photo below you will see an example of snowshoers NOT sharing the trail. There had been a skier track on the trail which was stomped out by snowshoers. The majority of West Elk trail users are cross country skiers. The trails are groomed for their safety and enjoyment. If you are unwilling or unable to share the trails with cross country skiers we strongly recommend you use James Loop on the West Elk trails, or the Buford Road, or the Rifle Snowmobile trails as those trails are also multi-use trails but skiers seldom use them.
